Computers and Printers


Computers

Both campus locations provide computers, printers, and Wi-Fi for public and student use.

Chester

  • 50 PC stations, all with CD burner, networked and available for use and and 4 Chromeboxes offering Google apps.
  • Windows 7 and Office 2013
  • Laser printers. Color and black and white available
  • ADF scanner

Midlothian

  • 110 desktop computer stations, all with CD burners, networked and available for use with no signup
  • Windows 7 and Office 2013
  • Laser printers. Color and black and white available
  • One flatbed scanner and one ADF scanner

Laptops and Tablets

Laptops and tablets are available for checkout at both campus libraries. 

  • Current students
  • Valid library card or student photo ID
  • INSIDE library use only
  • 4 hour checkout time
  • Student is responsible for entire cost of laptop or tablet if stolen or damaged. This may be over $1000
  • Files saved will be erased when laptop is shut down
  • Chester offers Dell laptops, Google Chromebooks, and Android tablets
  • Midlothian offers Dell laptops, iPad, iPad mini, and Nexus tablets 

Printing

The library provides access to laser printers from each computer. Each library also has a public copy machine. The college has a low-cost pay-to-print system.

Overview
  • Black and white and color prints from any computer in the library and through online uploads.
  • B&W and two-sided copies from the copy machine.
  • Per-page rates starting at $0.10.
Getting Started
  • $1.00 is automatically added to all current JTCC student accounts.
  • Sign in to your Pharos account online by visiting https://mobileprint.jtcc.edu and entering your myTyler username and password.
  • Upload and send print documents and view your account information though this site.
  • Students without their student ID and community members can purchase guest print cards at the PHIL machines on both campuses.
Releasing a Print Job

Students

  • After uploading or sending the document to print, go to one of the print release stations and swipe your student ID card or print card. 
  • Select your prints from the list of available print jobs. 
  • Review the amount due for the selected prints and touch the print button to release the print jobs.
  • The total price for the prints will be deducted from your student ID and the prints will release from the printer. 

Community (and students without a student ID)

  • Use the file-print option to send your documents to the guest release station.
  • Swipe your guest print card.
  • Select your prints from the list of available print jobs.
  • Review the amount due for the selected prints and touch the print button to release the print jobs.
  • The total price for the prints will be deducted from your guest print card and the prints will release from the printer. 
Printing FAQs

Why do I have to pay for printing?

  • Recoup some of the cost of printers, toners, maintenance and paper.
  • Reduce waste; encourage students to print only what they need.
  • Fairness. Students that use the service pay for it, rather than charging all students whether they use it or not.

I don’t want to pay to print - what are my alternatives?

  • Save your work to a flash drive.
  • Email your work to yourself.
  • Write it down! Sometimes a few notes are all you need.

How much does it cost to print?

  • Black and white - 10 cents per page
  • Color - 50 cents per page
  • Photocopies - 10 cents per page (must add cash value to print card- see library staff)
  • Students will begin with $1.00 in value on their Pharos account.

Where can I print on campus?

  • Printers are located in each campus library. There are two print kiosks per campus.
  • The Chester Library is located in Moyar Hall on the second floor in M216.
  • The Midlothian Library is located in Hamel Hall on the second floor in H202.

Do I have to pay for copies I don’t want or don’t like?

  • The college cannot give refunds for printer malfunctions or unintended copies.
  • Print carefully.

How can I save money while using the printers?

  • Print carefully. Use Print Preview to check documents and sites before sending.
  • Print Multiple. PowerPoint can be printed multiple slides per page. Staff members are happy to show you how.
  • Print only what you need. Do I really need this? Can I use this in another form…or can print just part of it?

How do I add funds to my Pharos account?

  • Pharos only accepts cash to add value to printing accounts.
  • To add value, visit the PHIL machines located in each campus library. Select the option to add funds to your account.
  • Swipe your student ID or print card (magnetic strip to the right) to access your account.
  • Insert bills into the feeder and select the option for “done” when you have inserted the money.
  • If you selected to print a receipt, it will be dispensed from the PHIL machine when your transaction is complete.

I’m a student, but I don’t have a student ID.  Can I still print?

  • Yes.  You can print without a student ID by purchasing a print card from the PHIL machine for $1.00.

I only have cash. Can I still print?

  • Yes. Pharos only accepts cash at this time. PHIL machines do not give change.
  • Library staff members are not able to make change for bills or coins.

Can I add value with a credit or debit card?

  • No. Pharos only accepts cash at this time.  Both campuses have ATMs available.  The Midlothian ATM is located in the Administration Building and on the first floor of Moyar Hall at Chester.

I can’t remember my Pharos username/password. What can I do?

  • Pharos usernames and passwords are the same username and password used to access myTyler applications like Blackboard, SIS, and Gmail. Pharos will accept your current myTyler password. Example: John Doe’s username may look like jd1234 or jdoe1234.  Your username is the first part of your John Tyler email address.

What file types are accepted?

  • Pharos accepts .DOC(X), .PDF, .XLS, .PPT, .RTF, .TXT, .PNG, .JPEG, .GIF, .TIFF, .XPS
  • If you have another file type, see library staff for more information on converting to an accepted file type.

Is there any restrictions on file names?

  • Yes. File names must be a minimum of 5 characters and a maximum of 20 characters.
  • Some characters in your file may be changed to accommodate Pharos.

Is there a limit on file size?

  • Yes. Files may be a maximum of 50MB each.
  • Please keep in mind that large documents will take longer to upload and appear at the Pharos release station.

My document failed to print. How do I re-release it or get a refund?

  • Speak to library staff about options to resend or re-release a print job.

Can I print on my own paper or on legal paper?

  • No. Patrons cannot add their personal paper to the printer. Legal size paper is not provided. Documents formatted for 8.5x14 will need to be converted into an 8.5x11 sized document. See library staff for more information.
