Printing FAQs
Why do I have to pay for printing?

  • Recoup some of the cost of printers, toners, maintenance and paper.
  • Reduce waste; encourage students to print only what they need.
  • Fairness. Students that use the service pay for it, rather than charging all students whether they use it or not.

I don’t want to pay to print - what are my alternatives?

  • Save your work to a flash drive.
  • Email your work to yourself.
  • Write it down! Sometimes a few notes are all you need.

How can I save money while using the printers?

  • Print carefully. Use Print Preview to check documents and sites before sending.
  • Print Multiple. PowerPoint can be printed multiple slides per page. Staff members are happy to show you how.
  • Print only what you need. Do I really need this? Can I use this in another form…or can I print just part of it?

Do I have to pay for copies I don’t want or don’t like?

  • The college cannot give refunds for printer malfunctions or unintended copies.
  • Print carefully.

I don’t have any cash/only a $20/only a $50. How can I print?

  • Be prepared! The vending machine only accepts $1 and $5.
  • Students may get change from the Business Office during regular business hours. Library staff cannot make change.
  • No credit or debit cards.
  • Financial aid funds cannot be applied to print cards.

What’s the Release Key?

  • Whatever you want it to be! The Release Key is your password used to print your jobs.
  • Try using your MyTyler username or your first name.
  • If you use the same Release Key for multiple print jobs, you can print them all at one time.

I can’t find my print job, and I sent it twice!

  • Resend the job with a shorter password.
  • Midlothian has multiple printers. Try selecting the printer for the section where you are sitting.
  • Make sure you authorize the cost by clicking “accept” after inputting your release key. Not doing this can stall the printer.
  • Grab a staff member! We are happy to help.

Confused? Library staff are happy to walk you through the printing process.
